Dr John Michael Verster

John Verster is founder and principal of Leadership & Human Capital Consulting, an independent consulting business with international associates offering high level advisory services to corporate clients on all aspects of strategic people management. In association with Path Coaching, he also offers executive coaching services to select senior executives from blue chip corporate clients.

He is also a director of BetaVector Investment Systems (Pty) Ltd, an intellectual property product business that develops novel applications based on artificial intelligence and complex systems theory for use in human and financial capital management.

In addition, John holds a part-time appointment as Extraordinary Professor at the Johannesburg-based Gordon Institute of Business Science of the University of Pretoria, where he is Director of the Doctoral Programme and of the Advanced Leadership Network.

From 1987 until his retirement in June 2002, John served as chief HR executive and a member of the top management team in the Standard Bank Group. As Group HR Director he held world-wide responsibility for the human resources function in this diversified banking and financial services organisation with over 34,000 staff represented throughout South Africa, on the African continent, and in a growing number of countries abroad. He leaves behind a legacy of best practices in people management that remain entrenched in the group's policies, strategies, programmes and procedures.

Prior to his corporate career, John spent 17 years in research and consulting roles at the National Institute for Personnel Research (NIPR), a human resources think-tank based in Johannesburg. There he built up and led a highly productive, multidisciplinary team of researchers and change agents in the fields of human development, social change, inter-group relations and work behaviour dynamics. He published widely, served on the editorial boards of several academic journals and participated internationally in advanced research programmes.

John holds 4 degrees from 3 South African universities, including a doctorate in psychology from the University of South Africa. He has also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in the USA.

He is professionally registered as a psychologist and a human resources practitioner, and is an elected associate of the Institute of Bankers in SA. He has earned various forms of recognition and acclaim for his academic and professional contributions, including awards of two prestigious medals for outstanding research contributions. He has served in a senior capacity on many business and professional bodies at national level, has been a director or trustee on the boards of numerous organisations and has also gained wide international experience.

John is happily married to Mary Ann (née Biesheuvel) and they have two adult sons.
